The New Standard for Customer Service

This year’s Boston Marathon should have been like any other – a celebration of accomplishment, shared by friends and family.

Then the unexpected happened. In an instant, chaos and confusion overwhelmed the area. There was disbelief, fear and questions.

This is the predicament that our very own Art Director, Jason Cheshire was faced with Monday afternoon while attending the Boston Marathon. Luckily, he and his friends had been a block away at their hotel when the horrible incident occurred. However, quickly after the attacks Boston went into lockdown mode. All city cell towers had been shut down. Calling anyone was virtually impossible. There wasn’t enough bandwidth left, with all the media broadcasting, to seek out answers on the social-sphere. Communication was key and texting seemed to be the only option.

Chesh and his group, which included a 10 week-old baby, were forced to evacuate their hotel and come up with an exit plan. Driving out of Copley Square was impossible. By then the streets were flooded with cop cars, ambulances, and security vehicles. Rumors and speculation began to fly – there was a bomb on the train, two more bombs were found and disarmed, the JFK library had been bombed, there were bomb threats at Tufts Medical Center, and hotels in the Copley square vicinity were under threat. They needed to get somewhere safe. Preferably out of Boston.

Where to go and how to get there proved to be more difficult then they anticipated. Chad Turner, our Co-Founder, proposed they hop on the Green Line of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and he would pick them up in Riverside. The problem was that neither Chesh nor Chad knew if any Line was even running. Instead of wasting time trying to find the MBTA Customer Service phone number to call, Chad decided to tweet @mbtaGM. They directly messaged him minutes later with the current status of the Green Line and a link to the current information regarding all Boston T’s. Just like that Chad was able to get a quick and efficient response without having to call. You couldn’t even search for a telephone number in that amount of time and, since many of the businesses had been evacuated, calling wasn’t even an option.

It goes to show us just how important and rewarding social media can be for businesses everywhere. Social media has been seen as a source of direct communication, which businesses can constantly use to engage with current customers and prospects. Comparatively, it is also an efficient 24-hour customer service platform. So whether you own a small business or a big corporation you should be working towards achieving this level of customer service (if you haven’t already).

Hats off to the MBTA and their responsive social media team! #Nicejob

OH THE BEAUTY OF LOGO MATURATION

“If it’s not broken don’t fix it.”
“It’s a wolf, not a husky.”
“The old logo was LEGENDARY. While this one is FOREGETTABLE.”

Those are just three examples out of hundreds of complaints about the newly released UConn Husky logo. It was originally scheduled to unveil on April 18th, but some people just can’t keep secrets. As was expected, it’s been received with mixed reaction. The naysayers are crying about the unoriginality of the design. As well as confusion as to why the logo maturation even happened. We feel for these individuals. We feel sorry they’re terribly stuck in a traditional way of thinking. That they’re unable to foresee the immense legacy this Husky will soon carry. (And will carry for many years to come). Furthermore, the incredible sense of pride every UConn Country resident will soon feel when wearing the newly official Huskies logo.
Brand logos are constantly evolving and it is crucial that they keep evolving to appeal to the era in which they exist. A brand’s continuous goal is two-fold; to always stay relevant to their consumers and to remain true to its original spirit. How does any brand expect to stay relevant if their identity looks washed out? By no means are we saying that some brands can’t rock the retro look. We’re just saying that brand maturation has been proven to boost confidence in brands’ performance. Just look at Starbucks. (See below.) They have taken an overly complicated logo and whittled it down to a simple image with no text at all. It seems to appear that as a logo grows more and more popular, the logo speaks for itself. We could go on and on about the evolution of brand logos (but this is a blog post, not a novel) so we won’t. You can just browse through the examples provided below.
Looking at the old Husky, we’d say it was apparent UConn was due for a makeover. The Jonathan Husky logo has been altered five times since it was first established in 1934. Also, the original UConn Husky was brown, black, and white. So for all who think the original Husky has always been an all white Siberian that is not the case. The fresh Husky logo will allow all UConn sports teams to finally look united. In previous years, there was a modification of the logo for each UConn sport. The football team had the C, men’s basketball had the UC, women’s basketball had the C wrapped around the basketball, etc. Now (for the first time in a long time) all twenty-four UConn Athletic teams will proudly and unanimously sport this Husky logo.
All things considered, we believe that everybody will soon embrace the less playful Husky logo and future generations will look back at the old one (smiling with its tongue out) amazed at how far their UConn brand has come. By no means are we psychics, but we have a pretty strong feeling that the mixed reaction on the logo release will soon subside. In the end, it’s not about fixing something that’s not (figuratively speaking) broken; it’s about the natural evolution of a brand that occurs around us everyday. Can you imagine if every company failed to evolve their brand? Ridiculous. It’s not the logo that makes the brand legendary; it’s the meaning behind it. But, what do we know? We’re just a bunch of marketers.

Phrases to Keep in Mind When Pitching an Idea on a Conference Call

A simple handshake can tell a lot about a person’s character. It’s the prelude to your first impression.

A firm handshake screams you’re confident and proud. A limp handshake can project either intimidation or insecurity. Direct eye contact with a firm handshake means ‘let’s get down to business’. But what do you do when that first impression has to happen via a conference call?
You can no longer connect a face to the voice on the other side of the call. You’re unable to decipher their nonverbal communication and then slightly alter the pitch based on their reactions.

Some key phrases to keep in mind when pitching your next idea on a conference call.

Why Americans Choose to Stay Home for Super Bowl XLVII

Well folks it would have been nice to see the New York Giants or New England Patriots plastered on every television screen in America this coming Super Bowl Sunday, but we can’t win them all. At least we still have the notoriously scandalous commercials and the tasty (preferably home cooked) hors d’oeuvres to look forward to. Or is it getting together with our buddies and gathering around the big screen HD TV (with the sweet DVR setup) that has us anxious for the Big Game? Whatever the reason may be, one thing’s for sure, we Americans prefer to watch the Super Bowl at home this year.

Rockin’ Out This Holiday Season

Nothing screams ‘Happy Holidays’ like the GO family dressing up as an 80’s rock band.

Here’s how it went down. We strutted through Sears, turning heads, kissing babies, and signing autographs. Upon entering the photo studio, we scared our photographer half to death with our hardcore Rocker getup. Once she recovered from a state of shock, the GO team then got down to business. We were licking guitars, duck facing, and screaming in the microphone like true rock stars.

The holidays are a time of giving. So we thought why not give you all the gift of rock? You can check out the entire album on our Facebook page, but take a look at a few outtakes below.

For those about to rock this holiday season we salute you!

The 2012 Social Presidential Election

In light of tonight’s first Presidential debate between Romney and Obama, we thought it would be appropriate to address how social media has been shaping this election. Buzz about the 2012 Presidential election has been spreading like a virtual wildfire across the vast social media terrain. Donkeys and elephants alike are taking to Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest to show their support and personally engage with their favored Presidential candidate. Seem familiar? Do the 2012 Summer London Olympics ring a bell? You know, the one that was deemed the “world’s first social games” with 393 athletes actively tweeting and posting while simultaneously competing for gold medals. The first Olympics ever to generate 150 million tweets and launch the “Olympic Hub” on Facebook for fans to converse with their favorite teams and athletes. Taking the engagement one step further, NBC created four mobile apps offering live video streaming, constant updates on every event, etc., making the Olympic viewing experience a more easily accessible one.
